A Little Effort Goes A Long Way … When You Change Your Air Filters Regularly

By: Michael King | Category: Air Conditioning, Air Filters, Energy Evaluations, Filtration, Furnaces, Heating, IAQ – Indoor Air Quality |

Interested in improving the efficiency of your HVAC system? A little effort goes a long way, and routinely checking your air filters can give your system the efficiency boost it needs to improve comfort at home and reduce energy costs.

How often should you inspect air filters? Monthly filter inspections will keep filter buildup to a minimum and reduce the likelihood of clogging, which can really put a strain on your HVAC system. Not only does this unnecessary system strain reduce indoor air quality and cause your energy costs to rise, but restricted air flow can lead to pressure issues and take years off the life of your system.

To prevent this unnecessary strain and reduce the likelihood of damage, a monthly maintenance schedule is recommended. If your air filters aren’t disposable, you can clean them, changing only as needed. For optimal performance, filter changes are recommended at least once every three months. These changes may need to be more frequent depending on the unique demands of your home, especially if you have allergy sufferers, pets or smokers in the household.

When switching out old filers, it pays to have some knowledge of terms such as MERV (minimum efficiency ratio value) and HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air). For instance, while HEPA filters are the most powerful air filters available, they are too strong for most residential systems. While many house filters have a MERV rating of 1 to 4, these do little more than protect your system. For improved indoor air quality, you need a filter that rates a higher MERV. To ensure the filter you choose is right for your system and your unique household needs, we recommend consulting with a professional.

Remember, routine filter changes can reduce your system’s energy usage by as much as 15 percent. If you’re not sure how to go about changing your air filters, speak to one of our trained technicians at Symbiont Service Corp.today.

Our goal is to help educate our customers about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems).  For more information about air filters and other HVAC topics, download our free Home Comfort Resource guide.
