Ways To Improve Indoor Air Quality When Allergy Season Hits Hard
With the falling leaves of autumn comes the fall allergy season and an increase in allergens such as ragweed pollen and mold. For many Florida residents, this means seeking refuge indoors in hopes of alleviating the suffering of such symptoms as itchy and water eyes, sneezing and coughing. While staying indoors during peak pollen times might be a good idea in theory, it fails to take one important factor into consideration – the quality of your indoor air.
Unfortunately, indoor air quality can often be worse than outdoor air quality. Thanks to energy-efficient home improvements and tighter construction, many homes suffer a severe lack of ventilation, which ultimately leads to an excess of moisture and allergens indoors.
Luckily, there a number of ways to improve the indoor air quality of your home, and alleviate the burden of asthma and allergy sufferers in your household. Options include:
- Cleaning: Routine cleaning such as dusting, sweeping and mopping can do a great deal to improve the quality of your indoor air. If possible, use a vacuum that offers HEPA filtration.
- Humidity control: Whether your air is too moist or too dry, it puts a strain on the respiratory systems of your family. Depending on the unique needs of your household, consider some form of humidity control, be it a humidifier or dehumidifier.
- Improved ventilation: Trapping allergens inside of the home is counterproductive to improving indoor air quality. The simplest way to improve household ventilation is to open doors and windows. Unfortunately, this doesn’t allow for humidity and temperature control. Other options include spot ventilation, continuous attic ventilation or a mechanical whole-house method, such as an energy-recovery ventilator.
- Air cleaners: Purifiers are designed to reduce a number of contaminants, including particulates, micro-organisms, gaseous vapors and odors. It is important to remember, however, that each system addresses specific allergens, so research will be required to find the best option for your home.
- Maintenance: From do-it-yourself filter maintenance to an annual appointment with a trained technician, routine maintenance improves efficiency and reduces the likelihood of contaminant buildup in your system.
