Upgrading Your HVAC System? Here’s Why You Should Look Into A Heat Pump
If you’re considering an HVAC upgrade for your Florida home, a heat pump might be the ideal solution. Offering efficient heating and cooling, heat pumps are a sort of one-stop shop for home comfort and energy efficiency. What makes heat pumps so much more efficient than the traditional combination of a furnace and air conditioning system? The answer is in how a heat pump actually provides heat for your home.
Instead of creating heat in a combustion chamber, a heat pump actually extracts heat from the outdoor air and uses in heating the air in your home. This operation allows heat pumps to provide anywhere from three to five times the energy that they require in electricity. A furnace simply can’t match this level of efficiency, and during the winter, this process also offers an enhanced level of dehumidification for your indoor air.
Since heat pumps offer both heating and cooling, it’s important to look into their efficiency in both areas when shopping for an upgrade. Heating efficiency will be indicated by HSPF (heating season performance factor), which gives you some idea of the level of heating you can expect compared to seasonal energy consumption. If you’re interested in high-efficiency heating, 8 to 10 HSPF is recommended.
Cooling efficiency has a similar rating, known as SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), which indicates the level of cooling you’ll receive for your energy dollar over the course of the season. High-efficiency heat pumps will carry a minimum 14 SEER.
Like other heating and cooling systems, different heat pumps come equipped with a variety of energy-enhancing features. For example:
- Scroll compressors last longer than piston compressors, and improve the warmth of your air while reducing the noise of system operation.
- Variable-speed blower motors offer varying levels of operation, making them much more energy-efficient than traditional blowers, which only operate at full-capacity.
- Thermal expansion valves bring precision to the process of refrigerant regulation, improving efficiency and reducing the likelihood of frost-related problems.
