Is A Heat Pump Ideal For Your Florida Home?
Florida homeowners looking to upgrade their HVAC system should consider a heat pump. Used in conjunction with electric heating and cooling systems, a heat pump works against the natural flow of air by forcing cool air to turn into warm through a series of heating and cooling operations. First, a coil of refrigerant is heated until it turns into vapor, which is then pressurized in a compressor. The vapor is sent through a condenser where cold air is blown over the coil. The vapor cools back to a liquid state and the air warmed by the process is sent through the ductwork of the house. The process repeats, keeping the house warm.
Because a heat pump takes a lot of electricity to run, it’s not ideal for all climates. Colder climates require more energy to run the pump because it requires a higher level of heat to warm the air. Heat pumps are ideal for homes positioned in milder climates, such as those in Florida where temperatures rarely fall below freezing.
Here’s how to tell if a heat pump is right for you:
- Heat pumps are designed for use with electronic baseboard forced-air heating systems. If you have a baseboard system, installing a heat pump can reduce heating costs by up to 45 percent.
- Heat pumps operate at maximum efficiency in temperate climates where the average temperature remains above 25 degrees. The heater is most effective when it can produce more heat units than the energy units it takes to create the heat. The pump can work in winter for heating air and summer for cooling air. Mild climates like Florida are ideal for use with heat pumps.
- Heating pumps cost slightly more to install than fossil fuel-based systems, but in temperature climates, such as Florida, they are more energy efficient and have less of an impact on the environment.
