Insulation Options: Factors To Consider
If you’re looking to insulate your home, there are a wide variety of insulation options that from which you can choose. Once you’ve decided on which areas you want to add insulation to within your home, the best course of action is to compare and contrast your insulation options and figure out which type makes the most sense for your home.
- Blanket insulation: One type of insulation is blanket batts and rolls, which are made up of things like fiberglass, mineral and wool, and are generally applicable for insulating unfinished walls, as well as foundation walls, floors and ceilings. This is one of the do-it-yourself insulation options that you can consider, and it’s installed by fitting it between your home’s studs, joists and beams.
- Concrete block insulation: Made up of foam beads and/or liquid foam, concrete block insulation is very useful for unfinished walls, in addition to constructing major new renovations to your home. This type of insulation requires some basic masonry skills to successfully install.
- Foam board or rigid foam insulation: Foam board and rigid foam insulation are two of the highest value insulation options out there, and they’re generally best for unfinished walls, floors, ceilings and unvented low-sloped roofs.
- Loose fill insulation: Consisting of cellulose, fiberglass, minerals and wool, this loose fill insulation is put to use best for hard-to-reach places, enclosed wall or open new wall cavities. To install this type of insulation, one must blow or pour it into place using special equipment.
- Reflective system: Reflective system insulation is normally applied for unfinished walls, in addition to floors and ceilings, and it’s made up of kraft paper, plastic film or cardboard. This type of insulation is do it yourself and can often be very effective at preventing downward heat flow.
