Why Are Heat Pumps So Efficient?
Chances are, if you don’t already own one, you have considered adding a heat pump to your home. Florida’s climate certainly lends itself well to this kind of heating and cooling system, and heat pumps have a reputation for being extremely energy efficient, particularly when compared to traditional forced air systems.
First and foremost, unlike traditional forced air systems, heat pumps don’t rely on combustion to produce heat, and they don’t require a separate air conditioning unit to produce cool air. Instead, both functions are housed in a single unit.
Heat pumps move heat back and forth across a refrigerant to provide warm or cool air as needed. During the heating season, the system extracts heat from the air outside the home and transfers it indoors. The cycle is reversed during the summer months when air conditioning becomes necessary. By using refrigerant-based technology to provide year-round comfort, heat pumps don’t force homeowners to maintain multiple fuel sources or separate ductwork for each system. Instead, a heat pump’s combined functionality increases efficiency from the very moment it’s installed.
In recent years, heat pumps have also introduced other energy-savings features that contribute to lower heating and cooling costs. Improvements in coil and motor design have increased their capacity to heat and cool effectively while simultaneously reducing the amount of energy needed for day-to-day operation. Similarly, variable speed blowers and compressors decrease the amount of electricity used to run the system, make little noise and are extremely proficient at removing humidity.
