Can I Use Geothermal Energy To Heat A Pool? You Betcha — Why It’s Actually To Your Advantage To Do So
Using geothermal energy to heat a pool is not only much more cost effective than using traditional heat pumps or gas heaters, but it is also much better for the environment. To fully understand the benefits of geothermal pool heaters, you first need to understand a little bit more about how they work.
Just below the surface of the Earth, temperatures remain constant and unaffected by changing weather conditions throughout the year. Geothermal pool heaters take advantage of this fact by using the natural heat found in water sources such as ponds, lakes or wells to heat your pool.
The process involves collecting water from one of these external sources, extracting the heat from it and then transferring the extracted heat to the water in your pool. This is accomplished by passing water from both the external water source and your pool through the geothermal heater.
Inside the heater, refrigerant is used to absorb heat from the external water source and transfer it to the water from your pool. The newly heated water is then returned back to your pool, while the external water is returned to the pond, lake or well. This cycle is repeated until the water in your pool reaches the desired temperature. Throughout the entire process the two streams of water never touch, so there is no need to worry about your pool water becoming contaminated by the external water source.
There are two main benefits to using geothermal energy to heat a pool:
- Low operating costs: Although geothermal pool heaters are typically more expensive to install than other types of heaters, they are far less expensive to operate. In many cases the cost of installation can quickly be recouped through energy savings.
- Environmentally friendly: Geothermal units have a small carbon footprint and don’t give off harmful emissions. This can help protect the environment for future generations to enjoy.
