Got A Heat Pump? Florida Homeowners Are Wise To Use 3 Tips To Maximize Performance
Heat pumps are some of the most complicated machines that Florida homeowners possess. There are many elements and factors that come together to contribute to the efficiency of the overall system. Here are three keys to getting the most out of your heat pump.
- Air flow: Your heat pump is designed to handle a specific amount of air flow. If the amount decreases, the system won’t be able to keep your home comfortable and will work overtime trying to do so. The best way to facilitate air flow is to keep your air filter changed on a regular basis. Check it once a month to ensure it isn’t clogged with layers of dust and dirt.
The blower, blower motor and air handler are other components affecting air flow. The blower works year round and can easily lose performance, which is why it’s a good idea to have it regularly serviced by a pro.
- Ducts: Ducts work behind the scenes, but play a central role in efficiency. In the average Florida home, Energy Star estimates that about 20 percent of energy is lost as conditioned air seeps out of leaky ductwork. This lost energy is another thing your heat pump will have to make up for, but you’ll still feel less comfortable as circulation is affected.
To reduce energy loss, seal leaks in accessible ducts with gooey mastic, which will harden after application. Reconnect separated joints with aluminum tape, and make sure ducts are insulated to prevent heat transfer.
- Refrigerant: Refrigerant enables the heat pump to actually remove heat from your home or pump it inside. Ideally, refrigerant levels should remain stable, but sometimes the equipment springs leaks. If this happens, it won’t transfer heat. It’s tough to know if you have a refrigerant leak, and the chemicals must be dealt with by a licensed professional, so give us a call if you suspect trouble.
