4 Steps To Hiring An HVAC Contractor With Confidence
Hiring an HVAC contractor is not difficult, but hiring the right contractor may require a little bit of work. Basically, there are four steps to hiring an HVAC contractor with confidence:
- Find out how they have treated customers in the past. You can do this by talking to people you know who have hired them in recent years, looking up testimonials, asking for references or looking up reviews online.
- Look for professional affiliations. A professional contractor should have professional affiliations, such as the ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America). Being involved within their industry’s “community” shows that they are committed to staying current on the latest techniques and technologies.
- Make sure they are certified. When hiring an HVAC contractor, you want to look for someone who is certified by NATE. NATE, which stands for North American Technician Excellence, tests HVAC professionals to ensure they have the necessary knowledge and skills. A certified technician must not only pass the test once, but remain current by taking continuing education classes or periodically taking a new test.
- Get an estimate. You want to hire a contractor who will come out and do a home evaluation, determining the exact problem or identifying your home’s unique cooling and heating needs. For example, the capacity of an HVAC system should not be based on square footage or the size of your old system. Instead, the contractor should do a cooling or heating load calculation, matching the new system to the actual work that is required of it.
You should then be given an itemized estimate, in writing. The contractor should be able to estimate your energy bills based on different efficiency ratings, and help you determine which option would be best for you long-term. It is this focus on your best interests that is most important when hiring an HVAC contractor.
