Learn How Geothermal Heating And Cooling Works: Water Sources
For Florida Suncoast customers, geothermal heating and cooling is a highly efficient and cost-saving source of heating and cooling. Geothermal energy is readily available and inexpensive once installed. It produces no harmful greenhouse gases and emits no pollutants. It’s vastly less expensive than heating and cooling that uses electricity or fuel and can, for example, cut pool heating costs by 80 percent or more. In the climate of south Florida, using geothermal heating and cooling makes excellent sense.
How does it work?
Geothermal systems capture heat from where it’s not wanted and move that heat to another location where it is wanted. The heat is moved by a refrigerant that transfers heat as it changes from a liquid to a gas and back again.
Water-source geothermal heating and cooling
Water-source geothermal systems are based on the principle that the water in a source such as a lake, well, pond or other body of water remains at a relatively consistent temperature. A predictable amount of heat can easily be extracted or released into this water at any time. Water-source geothermal systems are commonly used for home air conditioning and for heating for pools and spas.
The major components of the system are an evaporator coil, a compressor or pump, and a condenser coil. At the beginning of a cycle, source water is pumped into the system and contacts the evaporator coil, where refrigerant flowing through the system removes heat from the water. The compressor moves the heat-bearing refrigerant through the system and into the condenser. In the condenser, the refrigerant releases the heat to pool water that contacts the condenser. The pool water is warmed and is directed back into the pool. The expended refrigerant travels back through a flow valve to the evaporator where the cycle begins again. The source water and the pool water never mix.
