How To Reduce Pool Heating Costs
In Florida, heating costs in general are not a high concern; however, pool heating costs contribute to a significant portion of a homeowner’s energy bills.
Here are some effective ways to reduce pool heating costs:
- Use a heat pump to heat your pool. This neat little energy saver uses energy sourced from the outdoor air, converting it into heat for your pool. A heat pump generally costs less to operate than a standard gas unit, as the pump uses less energy to transfer heat energy than a gas heater does to generate heat from scratch.
- Consider a geothermal system for new installations. This type of pool heater nets homeowners an ultra-efficient system, but due to its higher installation costs, it’s best used in a newly installed pool. However, once its installed, your new pool can source a free, renewable energy source by finding heat energy from a nearby water source. Further, a geothermal system scores higher efficiencies than a standard heat pump, because temperatures below the frost line underwater remain constant.
- Use an efficient swimming pool cover. Pools lose a significant amount of energy due to evaporation, often up to 70 percent. Covering the pool when it’s not in use, whether you have an indoor or outdoor pool, greatly decreases this energy loss. A solar cover is ideal for boosting return on investment. While it costs more to purchase initially than some other covers, it pays for itself quickly in terms of longevity and lower pool heating costs.
- Set the temperature wisely. Most experts recommend setting a pool’s temperature between 78 and 82 degrees. Lowering the temperature to 78 degrees achieves optimal savings, and in Florida’s climate, should generally provide a comfortably heated pool. Further, if you currently set your pool’s temperature to 80 degrees, Energy Savers estimates that you could save as much as 30 percent for every degree you lower the setting.
