Geothermal Pool Heating: Learn All You Need To Know With These FAQs
Geothermal pool heating has taken the lead as a clean, environmentally sustainable alternative heat source for swimming pools and spas. Using the year-round consistent temperature of groundwater in lakes and aquifer wells, geothermal energy keeps pool and spa water warm without combustion or the inherent inefficiencies of a gas-fired heater. It produces no CO2 gases and employs long-lasting, low-maintenance equipment.
Here are some of the common questions we hear from customers about geothermal pool heating.
- What are the advantages of geothermal?
Geothermal can heat your pool or spa at a lower cost than gas. Depending on the size of the pool, the reduction in energy expenses can range from 70 to 90 percent. Also, geothermal systems have a service life of up to 20 years, compared to 5 to 10 years for gas-fired heaters. - How does a geothermal water-sourced heat pump work?
The system extracts latent heat from ground water in wells, concentrates it in refrigerant through a compressor cycle, then transfers the heat to circulating pool water through a heat exchanger. Well water and pool water never mix. - How large are the aquifer wells?
The wells range from 2 inches to 1 foot in diameter. Size varies according to the volume of water required by the system to heat a pool of a specific size. - Will removing water from the underground aquifer cause it to run dry?
All water taken from a geothermal aquifer is pumped back into the aquifer through a separate return well after the heat is extracted. This sustains healthy aquifer levels. - If I am heating a spa in addition to a pool, will I need a separate well?
Water from the same well can be used as a heat source for both a swimming pool and a spa. - How large are geothermal heaters?
The units take up more room than a typical gas heater. However, geothermal heaters can be installed indoors or outdoors, and multiple heating units can be stacked on top of each other if required.
