Energy Saving Tips For Homeowners
- Seal air ducts. If you seal the air ducts in the HVAC system in your home you will improve efficiency. The HVAC system is the biggest single user of energy and that is the reason it is the biggest source for energy savings.
- Insulate the home. Increasing the level of insulation in your home will keep the heat out and the cool air in. Residents of Florida’s Gulf
Coast should insulate to R-30 for the attic and R-13 for the rest of the house. - Seal the house. Have an energy audit performed and you will see places in which air is leaking out of your home. In most instances it leaks out around the windows and doors. After the energy audit is performed, seal up those problem areas.
- Use a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats make it easy to assure that when you’re not in the house, that the air or heat is turned down. You can program it for times you’re home, times you’re away, times when you’re sleeping.
- Replace the water heater. If your water heater is old, you may be spending more money to heat water than necessary. There have been many upgrades in water heater technology that you could benefit from. Replace an old unit with an Energy Star model.
- Upgrade to high-efficiency equipment. If you’re in the market for an upgrade or update to your HVAC equipment, choose Energy Star rated units. The return on your investment in new technology will be reaped on the money you save on your utility bills.
