Should You Get A Programmable Thermostat
Chances are you have heard about the advances in technology and have wondered should you get a programmable thermostat, we believe they are a great investment for homeowners in Florida. We have found that many homeowners that we work with are making a change to programmable thermostats and other high-tech home appliances and equipment.
A programmable thermostat works day and night, winter and summer and helps homeowners reduce their utility bills. How? Because many of us forget to turn the thermostat down when we leave the house or when we go to bed. A programmable thermostat relieves that burden of having to remember because it will turn down or up based on the times you have set. There are even “smart thermostats” on the market that will “learn” your habits and will turn up or down based on your lifestyle.
Should You Get A Programmable Thermostat?
Here are items to consider if you’re thinking of an upgrade to a programmable thermostat:
- As mentioned newer programmable thermostats are sophisticated and will link to your smart phone. The thermostat will let you know how long it takes to reach the comfort level you’ve set for heating or cooling. After you’ve set the thermostat it will adjust based on your habits.
- Newer thermostats are digital. It may be an odd feeling when your thermostat will “determine” that your room or home is too hot or cold and will adjust accordingly back to the temperature you had preset.
- Digital thermostats will also update you — in the smart phone app — as to when the heater or air conditioner was on and for how long.
How can you save energy and save money with a programmable thermostat?
If you’re not home during the day the programmable thermostats should be adjusted to reflect the fact that there is no need to heat or cool the home while you’re gone. If you reduce the setting on your thermostat by 10° to 15° for eight to ten hours per day (while you’re at work or school) you could potentially save up to 15% on your utility bill annually. The best part is that no one will be complaining they are too hot or too cold because no one is home!
When investing in a programmable thermostat do some research to determine what features you want in the system. You may just want one that is purely programmable, you may want one that sends you alerts, some of them will also tell you when to change the filters in the furnace or air conditioner. If you want your heating and air conditioning unit to operate at peak efficiency — and who doesn’t? — changing filters is a necessary task.
If you invest in a programmable thermostat you may spend upwards of $100 or more depending on the features you want, but you will see a return on your investment in the savings you reap on your utility bills.
