Is It Time To Replace Your Air Conditioning Unit?
Is It Time To Replace Your Air Conditioning Unit? There will come a time when you will need to replace the air conditioning unit in your home, but until then you may be wondering whether you should repair it or if it needs to be replaced. It can be a conundrum because it is not an inexpensive undertaking.
Is It Time To Replace Your Air Conditioning Unit?
Making a decision on whether to repair your air conditioning unit again or to replace it, you need to ask the professional who pays the service visit:
- “Is this repair viable?”
- “Will this repair keep the unit going for another cooling season?”
- “How much will it cost to repair?”
- “Would it be more cost effective to replace it?” Ask for a cost comparison on buying a new unit, the energy efficiency of a new unit compared to your current one.
- You also need to look at how much money you have already put into repairs and determine whether you want to keep throwing money at it and taking a band-aid approach to its operation
The GeoThermal professionals at Symbiont Service Corp., have experience in both repairing and replacing air conditioners in the Englewood, Florida area for two generations. Our professionals have the experience behind them to know whether your air conditioning unit is worth saving or if you would be best served to replace it.
We have put together a list of considerations you should look at when trying to make a decision on a repair or replacement:
- In Florida, our weather puts more stress on an air conditioner than in other parts of the country. A unit will usually not get many more than ten years of use before it becomes more costly to repair than to replace. If the air conditioning unit in your home or office is more than a decade old, you may be best served to replace it. After ten years, the repairs anyone makes to it are short-term fixes and the money spent there could be put toward a new, energy efficient unit.
- Tally up how much you have spent on repairs on the unit since you’ve owned it. Has it been repaired recently? Did you need to have it repaired before you used it last season? When you add up the money spent on repairs, and look at how frequently it has been repaired, you may find it is costing you more to continue the band-aid approach rather than replace it.
- What is it costing you to operate your air conditioner? The older a unit gets, the more it costs to run because as an air conditioner ages it is less energy efficient. Ask us what it would cost to run a new, more energy efficient model and weigh that against the cost of continuing to run your current unit, and needed repairs and again that might make it more cost efficient to replace than repair.
- How noisy is the unit? If you cringe every time your air conditioning unit turns on because it is overly loud, you may want to replace it for comforts’ sake. Also, if you home is overly humid or dusty, it could be because the unit is working improperly and that is causing the humidity and dust issues — these are items that can be addressed during a repair visit, but again you need to decide whether you are throwing good money after bad.
