How To Conserve Water And Save Money
Saving money is something many of us want to do, and try to do. Some people will give up their morning coffee at the local drive through, others will “cut the cord” on cable. What if you could easily save money by conserving water in your Florida home?
Florida may be surrounded by water and be overtly humid, but conserving water remains important. Water conservation not only saves homeowners money, but water is also a resource that needs to be conserved and preserved for the health of the environment.
When you conserve water you can decrease your utility bills while at the same time preserving this precious resource for generations to come. Of the many ways in which you can save money, conserving water and saving on your utility bills might be easier than cutting the cord on cable or giving up your favorite latte!
How To Conserve Water And Save Money
Here are ways to establish new water-preservation habits within your household that are easy to undertake, don’t require a remodeling project and won’t require you to invest in expensive equipment.
Our favorite ways to increase your water conservation and save money by lowering your water bill:
Got leaks? Check the house for dripping faucets. A dripping faucet can waste up to twenty gallons of water daily! In addition to wasting water, a dripping faucet can damage the areas in which the water is pooling or lead to mold growth if the water leak remains unchecked.
How’s your toilet? Have you ever heard strange noises coming from the toilet when it has been flushed and should be refilled and silent until its next flush? This could mean the toilet tank is leaking into the bowl. An easy test for that is to grab some food coloring, pet a few drops into the tank and wait and see if the colored water migrates to the bowl. If it does, the tank is leaking and needs to be repaired.
Toss it. Rather than tossing items like used facial tissue or feminine hygiene products into the toilet put them in a wastebasket. If you have curious pets in the house, use a wastebasket with a lid. Flushing anything other than toilet tissue is a waste of water and can plug the drain pipes.
Slow it down. Not everyone likes a low flow showerhead, but they definitely cut back on water usage. Take shorter showers; this will lead to both significant water savings and utility savings because you won’t be heating so much water.
Wrap it up. Insulate the water pipes that run to your bathtub, sink, shower, swimming pool and hot tub. This can significantly reduce the heat loss from the pipes and will bring hotter water to the faucets more quickly.
Measure it. How much water does your toilet use per flush? If it’s more than one and a half gallons, fill a plastic bottle with sand or pebbles to weigh it down, put on the cap, then put the filled bottle in the toilet tank. This will displace some of the water in the tank and will allow you to use less water when you flush.
Check it out. When is the last time you checked the numbers on your water meter displays? Choose a time when water won’t be used for several hours and write down the numbers you see. Check the meter display numbers in a few hours and see if they are the same. If they’re not, this means you have a water leak somewhere. Pinpoint where the leak is and fix it to save money and conserve water.
