5 Ways To Make Your Florida Home More Dust-Free
Having your home tightly sealed is ideal… when it comes to energy efficiency and preventing energy and heating and cooling loss BUT it leads to a build up of indoor contaminants and means you’re breathing in potentially unhealthy air. Dust is a way of life and cannot be completely eradicated, but you can take any of these five steps, or a combination of all of them, to have a home that is as dust-free as possible.
- Humidity is an issue for Floridians and their homes. You can install a whole-house dehumidifier to address indoor humidity. These units work in conjunction with your home’s HVAC system to keep the home at comfortable, and safe, levels. When you have proper humidity levels that can help keep your home more dust-free and more importantly, it will prevent mold growth.
- Clean air filters are a must if you’re seeking a dust-free home. The air filter in your HVAC unit traps dust before the heated or cooled air is circulated into your home. A filter that has a build up of dust won’t operate as efficiently, nor will it prevent dust from entering the home. We recommend checking the filters monthly and replacing them when they are dirty.
- Wash bedding and furniture coverings. When you wash the bedding and blankets in your home you’re removing a plethora of dust particles. Sheets and bedding can retain as much dust as your furniture and carpeting! When you wash your sheets and any blankets or furniture throws you are removing the dust particles from the air. If you don’t want to wash your bed coverings weekly, at least hang them out of doors in the sunshine to help loosen dust and get it out of your home.
- Vacuuming frequently removes dust and dirt particles from the carpets. When you walk into your home with your shoes on you are bringing in outdoor contaminants. Make note of when you sit on your furniture — do you see dust motes floating around your head? Vacuum the carpets and furniture weekly to loosen and remove all dust particles.
- Remove dust from hard surfaces. Grab a dust rag that captures dust particles or use a household dusting spray on a cloth to remove dust from tables, television screens and other hard surfaces in your home. You may even want to grab a dust mop that has an “electrostatic charge” and dust down the walls and floors that aren’t carpeted. If you don’t use a spray or a cloth that captures dust particles, you will only be making them momentarily airborne before they settle back onto the surfaces in your home.
While you probably can’t make your home completely dust-free you can certainly take steps to make it as dust-free as possible. Call us if you want to upgrade or install an air filter, electric air purifier or dehumidifier.
