Get copies of your past utility bills. We’d suggest gathering at least a year — if that’s possible. If you present your auditor with a copy of your bills and you know what you’ve paid, you may be able to see the benefit of performing upgrades to your home to make it more energy efficient — if it isn’t already. NOTE: If you don’t have physical copies of your past heating bills, you can contact your utility provider and request copies.
What problems have you noticed? Do the curtains move when the wind blows? Have you seen condensation on the windows or on the doors? Do you walk into one room and it’s too cold and another and it’s too hot even though the temperature in another room is just right? Make note of these issues and your geothermal technician can pay special attention to those concerns when he’s performing the audit.
The next steps
Once the geothermal or home energy consultant has listened to your concerns and made note of potential issues, and he has looked at your energy bills, he will start the process.
The home energy audit usually begins on the outside of your home. The auditor will make note of any visible problem areas. He will then go into the basement or the attic and will check for the levels of insulation in both areas. He will also search for any areas where there are holes that are not sealed.
The heating unit and air conditioner and water heater will be evaluated and he will make note of any potential issues with energy efficiency.
The final step in most home energy audits includes the auditor performing a “blower door” test. This test will find any potential air leaks in the home. The way the test is performed, a large fan will draw all of the air out of the home. Once this is done, it will be replaced by outdoor air (if there are cracks, crevices or other areas of the home that are leaking air). A thermal camera will be utilized to pinpoint the exact location of any air leaks. The energy auditor will offer solutions and recommendations and a written plan for your perusal.
