5 Money-Saving Home Maintenance Projects

By: Robbi Hess | Category: Air Ducts, Blog, GeoThermal Energy |

Whether you’re a new homeowner or a long-time homeowner, there are home maintenance projects that you need to perform either annually or more frequently. We have 5 money-saving home maintenance projects that you may well be aware of, or projects you may have forgotten to perform.

These projects could save you money simply because they are ones that seal your house up for 5 money saving home projectsefficiency or because they protect areas of your home you may not have thought about recently.

5 Money-Saving Home Maintenance Projects

You don’t want to wake up one day to an unexpected project like a flooded basement, leaking roof or broken HVAC unit! That is no way to start a day, weekend, nor is it one that you may have a savings account set aside for to address.

These projects should be at the top of every homeowner’s to-do list to keep your house as intact as possible.

  1. Inspect the gutters and downspouts. You’re looking for clear running gutters and downspouts that are directed away from the home and not into the basement. Look for gutters that are clogged with leaves and debris and clear that away. Inspect the downspout to assure the water from the gutters is running freely — you may want to direct a hose into the downspout to make certain water runs out. If your downspouts are not directed away from the house, a rainfall could lead to water making its way through a cracked foundation or prolonged water can erode the foundation and lead to basement flooding.
  2. Have your heating, venting and air conditioning unit inspected at least annually. The HVAC system regulates the heating and cooling in the house and it seems these systems break down when you need them the most! Your HVAC pro will inspect the unit, change filters and let you know the status of the unit and whether it will require potential repairs or replacement.
  3. What is the status of the insulation in your home’s attic or crawlspace? Too little insulation means that your heated and cooled air is escaping into the atmosphere and you’re wasting money. Inspect the insulation in the attic and replace any missing pieces. You can lose as much as $200 worth of heated or cooled air if the insulation isn’t up to par.
  4. Check plumbing and look for leaks. If you see standing water around the house, you could have a plumbing leak. If the water meter is spinning and you don’t have any water running, there is a leak. Fix any leaks as soon as you find them to prevent mold growth and loss of money in running or dripping water.
  5. Check for air duct leaks. If you stop air from leaking by sealing, caulking and using weather stipping you could save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling costs, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. You can install weather stripping around doors and windows where there are visible gaps.
