6 Energy-Saving Swimming Pool Tips
Keep the water circulation at its peak. When the water isn’t circulating properly in the swimming pool, this will impact everything — the clarity of the water and its cleanliness. Poor water circulation can even make the water unhealthy for swimming.
To keep the water clean and circulated your pool contractor needs to check:
- The cleanliness and condition of the pool filter
- Whether the skimmer and pump baskets are full
- The length of time you run the pool filter and pump (it should, on average, be run eight hours per day — at a minimum)
- How often you’re testing and balancing the water chemicals
Run the swimming pool pump at night. The cost of energy is sometimes significantly lower during the overnight hours when there is less of a draw on the electric grid. Ask your pool contractor to install an automatic timer so the pool pump and filter run at night; you can then set it and forget it.
Choose your swimming pool filter wisely. While all pool filters have advantages and disadvantages, a cartridge swimming pool filter is the most economical to use to filter the pool water.
A variable speed pump is more cost-efficient. When you’re making an upgrade to your swimming pool, the first item you want to look at is an upgrade from a single speed pump to a variable speed pump. A variable speed pump runs at a higher speed when it needs to — when you’re vacuuming the pool, for example. The variable speed pump will run at a lower, more cost-efficient speed when it’s just circulating the water.
Use a swimming pool cover. A swimming pool cover should be considered a must-have for swimming pool owners. A cover can act as a safety layer to keep children or pets from falling into the pool. A swimming pool safety cover also keeps debris from falling into the water and that could mean you need to clean and skim the pool water less often. The biggest benefit of a swimming pool cover is that it cuts back on the amount of water lost to evaporation. Also, if you’re heating the pool water, a cover will trap the heated water and save you money.
Heat the pool water in an energy-efficient manner. A geothermal swimming pool heater is one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat (and cool) the swimming pool water. There is certainly an up-front investment, but the system will pay for itself in the long run and you can even heat and cool your house with geothermal energy. Give us a call and let’s set up a no-obligation meeting to talk about how geo-thermal energy can save you money.
