Tips For Healthier Indoor Air

We’re pretty fortunate that in Englewood, Florida and surrounding areas, we don’t have to button up our homes as much as families in the Northeast and other colder climates do. Many of us will move our outdoor living indoors in the coming months and we want to offer tips for a healthier home & indoor air.

There are simple steps homeowners and commercial building owners can take to protect the home and building from both small and large indoor air dangers. Being proactive in small tasks may lead to much higher safety and quality of life.

Tips For Healthier Indoor Air

Here are some of our best tips.

  1. Check and change batteries in smoke detectors (as mentioned above, but which bears repeating)
  2. Have air conditioning and heating units (HVAC) checked in the spring and in the autumn. An experienced HVAC technician will check the filters and the operating condition of your HVAC unit. Dirt can erode the system and lead to it not working efficiently and effectively. Dirty filters can lead to allergens being pumped into the air.
  3. In the kitchen, do a thorough cleaning of the refrigerator and food cupboards. Replace kitchen sponges with new ones. You can also kill germs and bacteria in sponges by tossing them in the dishwasher or washing machine. It is more economical to use sponges, but there is less chance of bacteria growth if you use paper towels. Thoroughly wash and disinfect cutting boards. If the cutting boards have developed deep, hard to clean grooves, replace them. Bamboo cutting boards are harder and less porous and make it harder for bacteria to take hold.
  4. Do a spring and an autumn cleaning. Dust and vacuum and mop the entire house — top to bottom (don’t forget to dust off blinds and ceiling fans and under beds and the refrigerator and other appliances.
  5. Wash dog beds, dog bowls and other areas in which your dog sleeps and/or eats.

Take some time before the cooler air sets in and do a thorough house cleaning. Call one of our experienced air conditioning technicians to inspect and service your HVAC unit this autumn.
