A Residential GeoThermal Air Conditioning and Pool Heating System

We want to show you a GeoThermal heating system we recently installed
for both a pool and home on the same property.

We recently installed GeoThermal heating systems for a 1,700-square-foot home and an 8,000-square-foot pool, and we want to show you the layout of this installation.

The first question we have to answer any time we install a GeoThermal heating system is how we use the earth, and there are three main options to do so:

1. A closed loop in the ground

2. A closed loop in the water

3. Wells

For this job, we went with the third option. At the beginning of the video, you can see me standing outside the home by the supply well, where we have a pump submerged in the ground that’s regulated by internal controls.

As we move into the garage, we find the controls for the water we’re bringing into the home from the well. There are several items to take note of here. The first is the variable frequency drive, which controls the speed of the well pump and ensures there’s no unnecessary energy consumption and the home gets the gallons it needs for the air conditioner, heating of the pool, or both.

Next to that is the intermediate plate heat exchanger—a stainless steel device that separates the well water from the air conditioning system. Underground water is very unstable, and GeoThermal heating not only saves energy, but it also protects the unit from underground water.

Next to that is the flow center, which is a pump that circulates water through the other half of the plate heat exchanger. Basically, one side of the heat exchanger has the well water, and the other side has the closed loop with the flow center. We’re absorbing heat into the closed loop with the air conditioning system, and the well water is absorbing that heat. That’s the GeoThermal aspect of this system.

Below these components are the hot water tank and two water lines connected to the AC unit. These water lines take the wasted heat from the hot gas side of the AC unit and heat the water. The consumer can expect to receive about 70% of their yearly hot water free of charge from the AC unit just because they tend to run a lot here in Florida.

The AC unit itself is a York Variable Speed System, and this application is right at the 40 EER mark. It’s the most efficient unit you can get, and you’ll notice four water lines attached to it. The bottom two are connected to our flow center and the top two act as our hot water assist unit.

Watch the next video here, where we take a look at the pool heater for this property. If you have any questions about GeoThermal pool heating options in the meantime or if there’s anything else we can help you with, don’t hesitate to reach out to us or visit our website.
