Proper Air Ventilation Could Protect You From Coronavirus
Proper home air ventilation has always been important, but it has taken on a more significant role in the wake of COVID-19. Proper air ventilation could protect you from coronavirus and its airborne particles. With everyone #stayinghome during the #coronavirus pandemic, it is even more important to be breathing air that is free of pollutants.
Proper home ventilation will help you weather the Florida humidity and heat and will also alleviate concerns about indoor air quality. Proper ventilation also protects your home from moisture issues; moisture can lead to health problems, mildew, mold and damage and the home itself.
Proper Air Ventilation Could Protect You From Coronavirus
Building codes, especially in areas of the country as humid as Englewood, Florida take humidity levels into consideration and home builders know they need to protect homes from accumulated moisture. One way to do that is to understand the technology behind air flow and how thermal energy moves throughout a building. The discovery of the movement of air within a home or commercial building is now known to be a contributing factor in moisture appearing in areas of the building that were not normally associated with moisture. Moisture mitigation and home ventilation are technologies our geothermal experts from Symbiont Service Corp understand.
Our technicians ensure protection against moisture damage and moisture accumulation through proper home air ventilation and the use of vapor-retarders.
How does moisture move?
Moisture migrates from its point of origin and can travel:
- Through the air
- From areas of high moisture concentration to areas of low moisture concentration
Because of the ways in which moisture migrates, a homeowner will be told about the two-fold strategy our geothermal technicians recommend.
What our technicians may recommend for mitigating moisture
Proper ventilation. It all starts with effective home ventilation. If moisture makes its way into your house through the air filtration system, it needs to be addressed and ventilation systems need to be put in place. The attic and crawlspaces are two areas in which moisture infiltrates a home. To mitigate that, our technicians would recommend:
- Using an attic fan to assist air circulation and move the heated, moist air out of the attic
- Installing soffit vents or ridge vents to assure the supply and exhaust of air at the eaves and ridge balance one another
Using ventilating systems in bathrooms to remove moisture and even in the kitchen where moisture is generated will help remove it.
Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV). This type of ventilation system removes moisture from the living space. The ERV will draw moist air in, then circulate it with the dryer air in the house. It is effective at removing moisture from air coming into the home and from pushing moist air out of the home.
Vapor Retarder. Vapor retarders are materials that efficiently ensures there are fewer than 1.0 grains of permeability for each square inch of pressure differences. In a humid climate like Englewood, Florida a vapor retarder should be part of the home construction or part of a home remodeling project. This barrier will reduce the amount of moisture that gets into the home.
