Is your swimming pool water comfortable enough to swim in? Have the onset of cooler nights made the pool a little chillier than you find comfortable? If so you can talk with your geothermal expert from Symbiont Service Corp if you’re wondering, can you save money on pool heating costs? The short answer is, “yes.” The longer answer is how and we can help!
When you own a pool in Florida, you are fortunate that you can enjoy the pool for more months of the year than in many other areas of the country. A factor in how long you use the pool is the cost of heating the pool water.
Can You Save Money On Pool Heating Costs?
We have gathered a short list of ways to save money when you’re heating your swimming pool so you can potentially enjoy it year-round AND save money! It’s a win-win.
- Geothermal is the way to go. Yes, we know we are proponents of this type of heating and cooling, but there is a great reason — it’s cost effective, great for the environment and works amazingly well. A geothermal unit will have a higher up front cost than other systems, but the money you save will more than help the unit pay for itself. Consider too that the temperatures below the year — where the geothermal unit pulls its energy from — remains constant. A heat pump, which we mention below, may have to work harder if the air surrounding it isn’t warm.
- Heat pumps use the ambient warm air to convert that into heat for the swimming pool water. It will cost less to operate a heat pump than, for example, a gas pool water heater. A heat pump also requires a smaller amount of energy to heat the water.
- Look at the surface area of your swimming pool and consider for a moment how much energy will be lost through its surface and you can see the need for the use of a swimming pool cover. In addition to losing heat, an uncovered pool will lose water and use more energy simply because of evaporation. Use a solar cover to help heat the water and keep it warmer longer.
- The “best” temperature for the pool water is considered to be between 78 and 82 degrees. We realize that is just an average and you may want it warmer or cooler. Look at the temperature and consider whether you’re comfortable enough. Consider turning the temperature down a degree or two until you find a temperature until it’s at a temp that saves you money and keeps the pool water comfortable. You may be able to save more than 25% on heating costs for each degree you lower the water heater temperature setting.
