How Good Is The Airflow In Your HVAC Unit?
There are many reasons for inadequate and inconsistent HVAC airflow and here are the most common:
- The filters in the HVAC unit are clogged or dirty or overly efficient. What? An overly efficient air filter can lead to inconsistent airflow? Yes. Filters have varying MERV ratings (minimum efficiency report value) and they are what capture dust particles to keep them out of the indoor air. If the filters are too efficient, for the HVAC unit in the home or office, it will have to work harder and may not be as efficient. Use the correct MERV filters for your unique needs.
- Registers or vents are blocked. Check the vents and registers to ensure there are no obstructions. These could include: household items like carpeting, furniture, dog beds and more.
- Check that the vent is open. Sometimes they get inadvertently closed. Open it up and make certain the airflow is adequate before calling a professional.
- The condenser unit in the HVAC unit is blocked. This is a fix a DIYer can do because it involves checking the outside condenser and making sure there is no debris or leaves or grass cuttings blocking the unit. If the airflow outside isn’t adequate, the unit will work harder and the airflow will suffer.
- Check that there are no leaks in the ducts that carry the cooled air throughout the home or office.
- Get the ducts cleaned. Cleaning the ducts in the house can also have a positive impact on the indoor air quality. Over time, air ducts get closed with insects, pet hair, dust, dirt, dander, or even rodents. Call on a professional duct cleaning company and have the ducts cleaned.
- Inadequate levels of refrigerant in the HVAC unit. Call in one of our professionals to inspect the unit and check the refrigerant levels.
- If your HVAC unit is not large enough to adequately cool the home or office.
