What Happens When a Pool Heater Isn’t Installed Correctly?
The dangers of poorly installed pool heaters, from fluctuating temps to wiring hazards.
Is your pool heater installation up to standard? When it comes to pool heaters, the quality of the installation can make all the difference. I had a job in South Venice where a customer swapped out two of our geothermal pool heaters for an air source heat pump. They thought they were getting a better deal, but things didn’t turn out quite as expected. I’ll walk you through what went wrong and why it’s so important to make sure your installation is done properly.
Where Things Went Wrong at the South Venice Property
Two of our geothermal pool heaters had been in service for nearly two decades on this property. The system had been running smoothly for years, but the owner switched to a cheaper option from another company after seeing a better price. As a result, the pool that was set to 87 degrees only reached 63 because the air source heat pump was too small to maintain the temperature.
Issues with the Installation
The problems with the installation were apparent. The heater wasn’t bonded, which means it likely never went through proper inspection or permitting. The electrical wiring from the old system was left exposed and posed a dangerous risk of live power being activated by mistake. To make matters worse, the plumbing was left unsupported and hanging in mid-air. This is unsightly and goes against safety regulations. Additionally, the old concrete pads were cracked and falling apart. It provided no stable base for the new heater. A new and properly installed hurricane pad would have solved this issue.

Example of Precision Plumbing and Efficient Design
The system at the Japanese Garden in Englewood was installed in 1999 and has withstood extreme weather. This is all thanks to continuous concrete pads, hurricane straps, and precise plumbing. After enduring hurricanes Helene, Milton, and Ian, the heaters remained intact while the surrounding fencing was leveled.
Each unit is equipped with level pipes, ball valves for isolation, and TT ports for real-time diagnostics that ensure efficient operation. This installation that has been running strong for over 25 years highlights the value of quality installation and proper design, with separate power panels ensuring reliable heater performance.
When it comes to pool heating systems—especially in commercial properties—proper installation is important. Give us a call at (941) 474-9306 for a free estimate. We’d love to help you get a geothermal system that lasts.
