We’re back for part two of our Jupiter pool heater source pump control upgrade. We’ve finally installed the variable frequency drives and wanted to show you the new system that’s up and running today. If you missed part one of this message, you can view it here.

When the pumps come on, they come on in succession until they reach the desired pressure. This way, the units don’t exceed manufacturer specifications for pressure.

The beauty of installing the VFDs include the soft-starting capability I mentioned before, as well as the ability to set the pump by pressure. Also, if you run a pump at 80% speed, you’ll save 50% on your electrical consumption. Not only will the drive protect the unit it saves on energy consumption and extends the life of the pump.

Jim Howarth, Director of Field Operations, recently helped a customer of ours upgrade their resort-style pool and lazy river with 10 model 215 pool heaters. Five of them are on their main pool and five are on the lazy river. The five main pool units are on three 5hp submersible pumps. The formal pool holds 175,000 gallons and the lazy river holds 187,000 gallons.

We’re getting ready to install three Yaskawa p1000IQ Variable Frequency Drives that are going to allow us to control the pump flow by pressure. This will ensure that we don’t exceed the manufacturer’s specifications on the pressure going into the coils.

Our team recently installed a large geothermal pool heating system at Eagle Lakes Community Park, and we’re going to give you a quick peek at the system today.

You can follow along in the video above to see Mike Jaques, one of our team members, walk through the systems and explain how they work.

The systems we installed are heating not one, but four different pools at the park: the lap pool, family pool, slide tower, and wading pool.

The lap pool is being heated with two PH 215 units. These large-model heaters provide a better carbon footprint than using several smaller units when it comes to heating and cooling larger pools. The PH 215 puts out 215,000 BTUs and has two heat exchangers within the unit.

Another unit featured in our video is the PH 90—a smaller system that puts out 90,000 BTUs and has one heat exchanger per pool. This system is designed to heat smaller pools, which is why we’ve decided to use it in conjunction with the PH 215 units we described earlier. It’s sometimes necessary for us to mix and match various units within a pool heating system to achieve the most efficient solution for a project.

Now that we’ve covered the units we used for this project, you may be wondering how they work.

There are three main components to a pool heater: the pool water coil, the source water coil, and the freon system. Using these components, water is pumped out of the pool, through the geothermal units’ heaters, and then pumped back in.

Pool heating systems also use closed-loop, lake, and aquifer well source water, which is moved constantly throughout the heaters. In the case of the system we’re showing you today, we used aquifer well source water.

Heaters will automatically sense and send signals to a component called the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) when source water is needed.

I hope this information, along with the walkthrough tour of the system featured in the video above, has given you a better idea of how geothermal pool heating works and why it’s such an effective solution.

We have a GeoThermal heat pump installation today, and you’re invited to join us for a step-by-step look! You’ll be able to see how we prepare the Westwind Inn, a local condominium complex, for the installation process. Here’s what we do:

1. Clear a path for installation
2. Remove pre-existing pumps
3. Pour a concrete pad

4. Place PH90 heating units
5. Make sure there is easy access for units and gates
6. Install aquifer wells to feed heat pumps
7. Dig along a perimeter for underground wiring

How much heat is actually going into your pool? Today, we’ll show you how you can answer that question yourself.

Starting at 0:15 in the video above, you’ll see a two-page chart of some common gas heater brands and their features. These are the main brands available for pool owners in Florida, and there are a couple of things you need to know regarding BTUH ratings for these units.

First, a BTUH rating measures the unit’s heat input, not the heat output. In other words, that’s how much fossil fuel the unit is burning, not how much that’s going into the pool. If you want to know how many BTUHs are going into your pool, you need to multiply the efficiency rating of the heater by your heater’s BTUH rating.

For example, a 400,000K BTUH heater is a common heater for a commercial pool, and a 400,000K BTUH heater at 82% efficiency equates to a 328,000 BTUH output per hour.

No matter what heating unit you use for your pool, you need BTUHs to do it, so you need to know how many BTUHs are going into the pool versus how many BTUHs of gas the unit itself is burning.

As you’ll notice, some of the other categories of the chart include Low NOx and Fan-Assisted. A Low NOx rating is important for your heater from an environmental standpoint, and a Fan-Assisted feature basically means your heater is turbocharged.

If your pool heating equipment was submerged at all during the recent storm, we recommend that you have it inspected by a licensed, qualified technician to ensure the equipment is safe. Our own licensed, qualified technician, Jimmy Dietrich, recently sat down to talk about what the inspection process looks like.

When Jimmy or a member of his team is dispatched, the first thing they do is remove the electric panels to inspect any areas where moisture or debris could have gotten in. If moisture or debris is found, he will remove the affected components and replace them right away. Then he will inspect any pumps or other controls that may have been exposed or affected.

From a safety standpoint, checking the ground is very important. Jimmy is doing a great job teaching our team how to do this.
