In continuation of my series, “Choosing the Right Swimming Pool Heating System,” I want to discuss how geothermal heat pumps work.
With a geothermal heat pump, where does the water come from? There are multiple options, depending on your location:
- A supply well. Water is drawn from underground rivers, pumped through the system, and then returned to the ground in a separate, return well. For a 30-gallon project, we put the return well 100 feet away.
- A freshwater lake. If the lake is near enough and large enough, the lake can be used in place of a well, assuming it’s in a location that’s not liable to freeze. The lake needs to be 10 times the surface area of the pool you’re heating and at least five feet deep.

- A cooling tower.
- A groundwater closed loop.
Stay tuned for the next installment of my series. Until then, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at Symbiont Service Corp. We’d be glad to help.
