When You Hire A Professional To Conduct An Energy Evaluation, This Is What You Can Expect
Professional energy evaluations are a great way to reduce your energy usage while simultaneously improving the comfort of your home. Knowing what to expect beforehand can help you get the most out of an energy evaluation.
Before the consultant arrives at your house, there are a few steps you can take to prepare.
- Examine your past energy bills. This helps them determine which areas to focus on during the evaluation. To facilitate this process, pull together copies of your energy bills from the past year. If you haven’t saved copies of your bills, you can request them from your utility company.
- Make a list of any problems that you have noticed over the past year, such as condensation, drafts or rooms that are too hot or too cold. This can further help the technician diagnose problems.
After the consultant has a chance to examine your bills and listen to your concerns, they will begin the evaluation. Typically they start by examining the exterior of your home, looking for problem areas. Next, they will usually move on to your attic and basement, checking insulation levels and searching for unsealed holes. They will examine your furnace or heat pump, air conditioner and water heater, looking for potential efficiency problems.
Most energy evaluations also include a blower door test to help pinpoint air leaks. During this test, a large fan is used to suck the air out of your house. As the indoor air is pulled out by the fan, outdoor air rushes in to replace it through any cracks or openings in the exterior of your home. Using a thermal camera, the consultant can then see the exact location of air leaks.
Once the evaluation is complete, the consultant will make recommendations on how best to improve your home’s energy efficiency.
