Your Geothermal Pool: The Basics

By: Michael King | Category: GeoThermal Energy

Your Geothermal Pool: The BasicsGeothermal pools reduce energy costs significantly, while still providing all the comfort and performance that conventional pool heating systems offer, making them well worth the investment.

A geothermal pool is comprised of three general components: the ground looping system, or the heat source; the heat pump itself, which moves heat from one place to another; and the swimming pool and its related equipment for receiving heat.

The ground-looping components of the geothermal pool comprise the actual geothermal system. Generally an open-loop construction, the geothermal pool uses a water source (such as a lake or well) to act as the heat exchange fluid, which will eventually circulate through the entirety of the system to transfer heat. At this point in the pool-heating process, the fluid picks up energy from the water source, taking on its energy. (The same water source can also act as the deposit area at the end of the cycle, or a separate water source can be used.)

Then, the fluid moves through the heat exchanger, where the energy drawn from the fluid is processed and changed into energy that the pool equipment can use to heat the pool’s water. However, the pool water and the geothermal water do not mix during the process; just the energy transfers from one body of water to the other.

The pool equipment then works to circulate the heat throughout the water, creating a comfortable, heated environment.

There are several advantages that geothermal pools offer to which conventional systems can’t compare. Geothermal pools:

  • Offer top performance
  • Are not subject to outdoor weather factors that influence its efficiency
  • Use only small amounts of electricity to run their pumps
  • Use system components that are for the most part installed underground, and are thus not subject to weatherization
  • Can also cool if desired

Geothermal pools deserve a second look. If you’re considering upgrading or adding a pool to your home, business or aquatic park, contact Symbiont Service Corp. today.

Our goal is to help educate our customers in Englewood, Florida and surrounding areas about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems).  For more information about Geothermal pools and other HVAC topics, download our free Home Comfort Resource guide.
