Hard Start Kits Help Extend Compressor Life
A hard start kit can be added to the electrical circuit of any heat pump to help extend the life of the compressor. This would include pool/spa heat pumps, air conditioners and geothermal heat pumps.
Hard start devices use a capacitor/relay combination to help the compressor start with
maximum efficiency allowing the compressor to start 10 times faster.
When a compressor starts typically the power factor is less than 50%. This means only 50% of the available power is used during compressor start-up. At that condition the compressor has to work much harder creating a lot of excess heat. With the hard start device installed the power factor is increase to 98% enabling all available power to the compressor during start-up. The result is smooth fast start for the compressor, decreasing the heat and stress.
Another added benefit of a hard start kit is the reduction of light flicker during compressor start-up. With the compressor starting up 10 times faster than normal light flicker is usually completely eliminated. Hard start devices also help the compressor start when they are under a high load; this happens when the power goes out momentarily. Normally this would cause your compressor to not start and cycle on the overload.
