How Can You Stay Cool This Summer
“I’m melting…” If you live in Englewood, Florida — or any part of Florida, honestly! — you can understand that “melting” feeling when it comes to the heat and humidity that we all deal with in the summer months. How can you stay cool this summer without breaking the bank on the family budget? One word: Geothermal.
You can certainly stay cool by cranking up the air conditioning unit, but how will you feel when the utility bill comes in? There are ways you can stay cool this summer either by using your geothermal unit and by taking some steps to cool the house in ways that may not add to your utility bill.
Before we get started, here are some items that will help year-round with heating and cooling:
- Properly insulate the home or commercial building
- Install energy-efficient windows and doors
- Use shade to keep rooms cool
- Proper ventilation is also key
How Can You Stay Cool This Summer
Here are some tips to keep cool in your home this summer:
- Clean and/or replace air conditioner filters
- Do laundry and run the dishwasher before you go to sleep so you’re not feeling the heat and humidity from running them
- Use a programmable thermostat to cool the house. Program the unit to turn down when you’re at work during the day
- Turn off exhaust fans in the bathroom or above the stove within 15-minutes of using them. If they’re noisy, invest in a low-noise, higher efficiency model
- Pull down the shades in the windows during the daytime to block the heat of the sun
- Invest in energy efficient products when you buy appliances. There may be energy saving credits and incentives and they also run “cooler” than other types
- Install a geothermal heating and cooling unit — the ROI, longevity of the system and its ability to cool the home and reduce humidity are beyond compare
Ways to cool the home
- Cross ventilation matters. Open windows, put in fans and even put a fan in the middle of the room and use cross ventilation to cool the house. It’s an energy efficient way to cool the home.
- Install a whole-house fan to cool the home.
- Air conditioning. This is a no-brainer, but using a geothermal heating and cooling system is a cost effective, environmentally-friendly way to cool the house and lower your utility bills.
