Geothermal Air Conditioning Provides The Best Of Both Worlds: Low Energy Costs And High Comfort
If you’re someone who likes to keep your home delightfully cool during southwest Florida’s long, hot and humid summers, consider a geothermal air conditioning system. These systems offer lower operational and maintenance costs than other types of air conditioning systems. Geothermal heat pumps tap into the naturally cooler temperatures underground, where temperatures sit from 45 to 70 degrees throughout the year.
Geothermal systems can use underground loops filled with environmentally safe liquid that dispel the heat from your home in the summer and deposit it underground. The ground absorbs it, and some geothermal air conditioners have devices called desuperheaters that can even heat your water in the summer, using this waste heat — lowering your energy bill even more.
In Florida, cooling your home takes about 60 percent of what you spend on energy and 8 percent on heating water. When you use geothermal air conditioning, your cooling bills drop substantially. These systems also last considerably longer, with the life expectancy of the indoor air handler approaching 25 years and the below-ground loops lasting 50 years or more.
The geothermal units do not have outdoor compressors that take up space in the yard, need maintenance and make noise. Very little of the geothermal system is exposed to the elements, which adds to the wear and tear on the condensers for conventional air conditioners.
The initial cost of installing geothermal air conditioning is more than an air-source heat pump or a standard air conditioner. However, through 2016, the federal government is offering a tax credit in the amount of 30 percent for the total cost if the system and its installation. There is no upward limit for the costs, making this kind of air conditioning system attractive for homeowners who want the highest efficiency with low maintenance.
The type of geothermal system that’s right for your home requires consultation with an HVAC contractor, since these depend on individual yard size, geology and hydrology.
