Should You Use A Heat Pump To Heat Or Cool Your Home?

Heat pumps use ambient air to heat your home, pool or commercial building. Should you use a heat pump?

A heat pump is considered one of the most energy-efficient and cost-effective ways to both heat and cools a home or building. In Englewood, Florida because of the warm, humid air, this device can save money and energy when you heat and cool the house or swimming pool.

This technology uses the heat in the air as the fuel for heating and cooling. If you’re using or considering using one for your heating and cooling needs, you will also want to install a thermostat for it as that will save energy and money on your heating and cooling bills; that’s a win-win.

When a heat pump is installed, it will also have an electrical strip installed that supplements heat when the temperatures go lower than 32 degrees. When the air surrounding the heat pump is at the freezing point, there is not enough warm ambient air to efficiently heat the air. Turning the thermostat down when you’re away or in bed or not using the swimming pool may cause the electrical strip to operate, even when it’s not quite necessary. When you have a heat pump thermostat installed, it will override the electrical strip and cause the heat pump to do its job rather than relying on the other heat source. If a special thermostat hasn’t been installed you’re better served to keep the heat pump set at a “daytime” setting instead of turning on a “nighttime” (which is usually cooler) setting.

Should You Use A Heat Pump To Heat Or Cool Your Home?

The Department of Energy found, “heat pumps create three watts of heat for every watt of electricity it consumes.” When an electrical strip kicks in, it uses “one watt of power for every watt of heat generated.” When the thermostat overrides the strip, you’re paying more for energy than if the pump was generating all of the heating and cooling needs for your pool, office building or house.

What are other thermostat benefits?

  1. They are programmable; this is ideal because you’re not heating or cooling the house when you’re not in residence
  2. They have a myriad of features that can increase energy savings and lower utility bills
  3. You can override the settings if you’re home at a time you’re typically not
