Heat-Pump Thermostat: A How-To Guide For Enhancing Energy Savings
Heat pumps may be one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat and cool homes in Florida because they use the heat in the air as fuel. To get the most efficiency from a pump, installing a heat-pump thermostat helps save energy, especially during the winter.
Most air-source heat pumps have an electrical strip that provides supplementary heating when temperatures dip around the freezing point. If you turn your thermostat down at night, the strip might turn on if it’s taking too long to heat the interior to match the thermostat settings. Special heat-pump thermostats, however, override this function to keep your heating costs lower. Without a special thermostat, it makes more sense to leave the heat pump set at the daytime setting rather than risk turning on the supplementary heat in the morning.
According to the Department of Energy, a heat pump can create three watts of heat for each watt of electricity that it uses. The electrical strip uses one watt of power for each watt of heat created. The thermostats that override the heating strip use intelligent recovery technology or adaptive recovery to gradually start to warm the house during the night. Instead of not running during the night, the heat pump may turn on several times so that the load in the morning is lighter.
These heat-pump thermostats may also have other features to increase your energy savings throughout the year, like programming it so that the heat pump doesn’t run as much during the day when you’re not home. Most thermostats let you choose to heat or cool the home just prior to getting home, making your home comfortable. With a programmable thermostat, you’re not paying to condition your air when you’re not occupying the structure. And if you find yourself at home when you didn’t plan to be, you can temporarily override the programmed settings.
