Today we’re talking a little bit about the open loop and closed loop methods for using your geothermal pool heater.

If you have a big enough cooling tower, we can tap into that and use it as a heat source for your geothermal pool heater. From the A/C loop, we’ll put a small booster pump in and pipe into the valve, then run the water through our system and back into the other system. This actually makes the A/C more efficient.

The only question to consider is how big the cooling tower is if you’re running heat for the buildings. It has to have enough capacity to run heat for the pool and the building. That’s something we will look into when we are looking at it beforehand.

The well system is considered an open loop system. The closed loop is a pipe that’s rated for high pressure. You can also do a pond closed loop or a vertical loop. However, instead of doing a vertical loop in Florida, it’s actually cheaper and more efficient for you to drill wells. And the horizontal closed loop is a function of how much land you have to work with.

For pool heating, we have found that the open loop has a lower initial cost, it’s better for a large-scale pool, and it’s more efficient with temperatures.

The closed loop has too high of an initial cost to justify installation and is limited geographically for horizontal loops.
